Iwas mad at William; I couldn’t believe he would take the fall when it was all my idea to operate on that child. I didn’t feel good about it, knowing fully well he was slammed with a suspension all because we chose to do what was right.

I sighed, massaging my head as it had already begun throbbing. I couldn’t stand the injustice in that boardroom; that was why I walked out. It was beyond ridiculous hearing that one of your brightest doctors was punished because he saved a patient’s life. Damn hospital bureaucracy!

I didn’t realize Mary was walking towards me when I slammed into her. My eyes had already started turning, and it felt like my chest would rip out of my heart at any moment.

“Jeez, Mia. You don’t look good,” She noted, helping find the nearest seat. How was I supposed to feel good? Even though I hadn’t forgiven William entirely for what happened to us in the past, the last thing I wanted to happen was for him to ruin and jeopardize his career for me.

“I am, I am,” I lied, wriggling myself. I had gathered the attention of other nurses and patients. It was bad enough that I had entered their wrong books; I couldn’t bear being the subject of another round of discussion.

“Mia, please. Let me get you some water; you don’t look good,” She insisted, trusting Mary’s motherly instincts to kick in. I reluctantly obeyed her even if all I wanted to do at that moment was go to the hospital rooftop and scream at the top of my lungs.

After a short while, Mary returned with a cup of water and a sachet of aspirin. I looked at her in surprise; how did she know my head throbbed?

“I’m a nurse, Mia—a certified one at that. Do you think I won’t know when I notice someone in distress,” She urged me to take the drugs, and I did.

“What are you guys doing? Ever heard of the word privacy!” Mary turned to the nurses I saw earlier. I was sure they came to have a peek at what we were doing so they could have something else to discuss, but I couldn’t and wouldn’t be bothered. They should do their worst for all I cared.

She placed her hands on my shoulders, and I felt the tears trickle down my face. I was hurt, angry, and disappointed in the whole system. I saw how William strived to save that kid’s life and what did he get in return?

“Is this about the verdict?” Mia asked. I chuckled; of course, she would know after all the news traveled fast in this hospital. The board meeting was barely over, and I was sure everyone knew about their favorite ED doctor’s suspension. I nodded, letting the tears flow freely as she patted me on the back.

“I’m sorry, Mia. But you know how things work; you came from Rutgers. I am sure they operated the same way,” Mary reminded me.
